The user interface here is completely decoupled from the specific processor of the command. A worm, on the other hand, uses a network such as the Internet to spread. Millions of computers are always connected to the Internet. The rate at which a worm can propagate and spread to other computers is orders of magnitude faster than the rate at which viruses can spread for two reasons: (1) there are a large number of available computers to infect, and (2) the time required to connect to those computers is typically on the order of milliseconds. Given how pervasive networking is, this chapter will focus on worms instead of traditional viruses. The material in this chapter on worms illustrates how security vulnerabilities can affect the entire Internet. At the same time, worms are simply one type of threat that can result from security vulnerabilities.
